Welcome to Slartibartfast's Digital Fjords

Award-Winning Planet Design Since 10,000,000 BC

"I'd far rather be happy than right any day."

Greetings, Traveler

Welcome to my humble corner of the digital hyperspace. I am Slartibartfast, designer of coastlines, creator of award-winning fjords, and reluctant maintainer of this website.

After spending millions of years crafting the finest planetary features in the cosmos (particularly fond of my work on Norway, if I may say so), I've taken up the rather pedestrian hobby of maintaining web servers. It's not quite as fulfilling as winning an award for Fjord design, but it passes the time between universe iterations.

⚠️ Notice

This server is maintained with the same attention to detail I once gave to continental shelving. Which is to say, it works most of the time, unless the Vogons are doing construction nearby.

About This Domain

The Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything is, of course, 42. What the question actually is remains a matter of some debate. But this domain? This domain knows its purpose.

🌍 Planetary Standards

Hosted on infrastructure meeting Magrathean quality specifications (or close enough, given the limitations of 21st century Earth technology).

🗨️ Voice Communication

For those who prefer voice communication to the written word. See the TeamSpeak section below for connection details.

📡 Always Online*

*Except during Vogon poetry readings, demolition notices, or routine maintenance of the Heart of Gold's Infinite Improbability Drive.

TeamSpeak Server Access

For those occasions when typing simply won't do and you need to communicate via actual sound waves (or their digital equivalent), I've set up a TeamSpeak 6 server. It's rather like having a proper conversation, only you're all in different locations and possibly different time zones.

🔒 Server Access Required

Both the TeamSpeak and IRC servers are password-protected. But where's the fun in simply telling you the password? After all, I spent millions of years perfecting the art of coastline design - surely you can spend a few moments solving a simple puzzle.

Complete the challenge below to reveal the password for both services.

🌌 The Ultimate Question Challenge

As any well-informed individual knows, the Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything is 42. But do you know the most fundamental rule of hitchhiking through the galaxy?

According to the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, what is the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have?

Installing TeamSpeak 6 Client

Before you can connect, you'll need the TeamSpeak 6 client software. TeamSpeak 6 is the latest version, released in January 2025, featuring screen sharing, communities, and a modernized interface.

🖥️ Windows / Mac / Linux

  1. Visit the official TeamSpeak website: teamspeak.com/downloads
  2. Download TeamSpeak 6 (currently in beta) for your operating system
  3. Install the application following the installation wizard
  4. Launch TeamSpeak 6

Note: TeamSpeak 6 is currently in beta. You can still use TeamSpeak 3 to connect to TS6 servers if preferred.

📱 Mobile (iOS / Android)

  1. Search for "TeamSpeak" in your app store
  2. Download and install the official TeamSpeak app
  3. Open the app

Mobile clients support both TS3 and TS6 servers.

Connecting to the Server

Quick Connect

  1. Open TeamSpeak client
  2. Go to Search / Connect
  3. Enter the server address: ts.fourtytwo.info
  4. Enter the server password: (revealed after completing the challenge above)
  5. Choose a nickname
  6. Click Connect

💡 Tips for First-Time Users

  • Test your microphone and audio settings before connecting (Cog Icon → Audio)
  • Use Push-to-Talk if you're in a noisy environment (Cog Icon → Audio → Push-To-Talk)
  • TeamSpeak 6 introduces new features like screen sharing - explore the interface!
  • Be respectful of other users - it's not as lawless as the Vogon homeworld
  • If you can't connect, ensure port 9987 isn't blocked by your firewall

IRC Chat Server

Ah yes, Internet Relay Chat - the text-based communication protocol from a more... civilized age. Before the era of endless emoji reactions and animated GIFs, there was IRC: pure, unadulterated text flowing through the digital aether. Quite reminiscent of how we used to communicate in the fjord design department, actually.

For those who appreciate the elegant simplicity of command-line interfaces and the charm of prefix-based commands, I've set up an IRC server. It's rather like the Hitchhiker's Guide itself - all the essential information, none of the unnecessary frills.

💬 Server Connection Details

Server Address: irc.fourtytwo.info

Port: 6697 (SSL/TLS required)

Password: Revealed after completing the challenge above

Network Name: Digital Fjords

Main Channel: #lobby

🔐 Security Notice

This server requires SSL/TLS encryption for all connections and uses a self-signed certificate. The web client handles this automatically, but if you're using a desktop IRC client, you'll need to configure it to accept self-signed certificates.

Connect via Web Browser

The easiest way to access IRC is through our web-based client. No software installation, no configuration headaches - just click and chat:

🌐 Launch Web IRC Client

Contact the administrator, they will create an account for you. Sign in, and you're connected. You are encouraged to change your password upon login by clicking the cog icon. The web client handles all the SSL certificate details automatically.

Using an IRC Client

If you prefer using a traditional IRC client (HexChat, WeeChat, mIRC, etc.), you can connect with the details provided above. Just remember to:

Available Channels

  • #lobby - General discussion and introductions

Essential IRC Commands:

/join #lobby Join the main channel
/msg nickname message Send a private message
/nick newnickname Change your nickname
/list List all available channels
/away message Mark yourself as away

📜 IRC Etiquette

  • Don't flood the channel with repeated messages - it's considered poor form
  • Wait a few minutes for responses - IRC users aren't always watching their screens
  • Use /away when you step away, so others know you're not ignoring them
  • Respect channel operators (@ symbol) - they maintain order, much like I maintain fjords
  • Keep conversations relevant to the channel topic
  • No spam, no harassment, no Vogon poetry (seriously, we have standards)

Why IRC in 2026?

You might wonder why anyone would use IRC in an age of Discord, Slack, and countless other modern chat platforms. Well, let me tell you:

⚡ Lightweight

IRC uses minimal bandwidth and resources. Perfect for when you're browsing the galaxy on a slower connection.

🔓 Open Standard

No corporate overlords, no data mining, no ads. Just pure communication, as the Protocol Gods intended.

🎭 Privacy Friendly

No account required, no email verification, no tracking. Choose a nickname and you're done.
